UNESCO World Heritage
Göreme Open-Air Museum
The Göreme Open-Air Museum is a former monastic complex of rock-cut churches and chapels decorated with Byzantine frescoes, just outside Göreme village. It is the centrepiece of “Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia”, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985, and has been open to visitors since 1967.
What you will see
The complex is a cluster of churches carved into the soft volcanic tuff, many painted with scenes from the life of Christ and the saints. Look out for:
- The Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise) — dating from the late 11th to early 12th century; very little daylight reaches inside, which has helped keep its frescoes vivid.
- The Apple Church (Elmalı) and the Snake Church (Yılanlı).
- The Sandal Church (Çarıklı).
- The chapels of St Basil and St Barbara.
- The Nunnery (Kızlar ve Erkekler Manastırı), a rock-cut monastic building.
- The Tokalı Church, one of the most richly painted churches in Cappadocia.
Planning your visit
- 1
Check hours and tickets
Opening hours and entry fees change by season. Check the official Turkish museums website (muze.gov.tr) before you go.

They are fragile: no flash, and some churches do not allow photography at all — follow the signs.
- 5
Getting there
An easy walk from Göreme village; from the airport it is about 40 km to Göreme.
Combine it with
Walk back to Göreme through the surrounding valleys, or continue to Paşabağ and Çavuşin. For a full day, add a visit to an underground city, and if you are up early, start with a sunrise balloon flight. Our Cappadocia travel guide has more ideas.
