Cappadocia travel guide
Cappadocia Travel Guide
Cappadocia is a volcanic landscape of fairy chimneys, rock-cut churches and cave houses in central Türkiye, and Göreme is its heart — about 40 km from Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport. Two to four days covers the highlights: a balloon flight, the Göreme Open-Air Museum, a couple of valley walks and an underground city.
The main villages
Most visitors stay in one of these villages; all are within an hour of the airport.
Göreme
The busiest base: cave hotels, balloon views at sunrise and the UNESCO-listed open-air museum on its doorstep.
40 km from the airport
Uçhisar
Built around a towering rock castle, often called the highest point in Cappadocia; quieter, with panoramic boutique hotels.
37 km from the airport
Ürgüp
The largest town in the valleys, with restaurants, local wineries and the widest choice of hotels.
48 km from the airport
Avanos
On the Kızılırmak, the Red River, famous for pottery made from the river’s clay — a craft that goes back to the Hittites.
35 km from the airport
Ortahisar
A traditional village beneath its own rock fortress, with old stone houses and fewer crowds.
43 km from the airport
Mustafapaşa
A former Greek village with carved stone mansions and a slow, peaceful pace.

Valleys and fairy chimneys
The valleys are best explored on foot, early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the light turns the rock pink and gold.
- Paşabağ (Monks Valley) — multi-capped fairy chimneys, one housing a chapel dedicated to St Simeon; off the Göreme–Avanos road on the way to Zelve.
- Çavuşin — a village below an old cliff-side settlement, and the starting point for several valley trails.
- Devrent and the Three Beauties — in the Ürgüp district: Devrent’s curious rock shapes and Üç Güzeller, a “family” of three fairy chimneys.
- Güvercinlik (Pigeon Valley) — between Göreme and Uçhisar, its rock walls dotted with old dovecotes.
- Kızılçukur (Red Valley) and Güllüdere (Rose Valley) — the classic sunset walk, with rock churches hidden along the trails.
Unmissable sights
Göreme Open-Air Museum
A monastic complex of rock-cut churches with Byzantine frescoes, at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage site.
Hot air balloon flight
The sunrise flight over the valleys — weather permitting.
Underground cities
Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı, multi-level refuges carved deep into the rock.
Ihlara Valley
A 14 km gorge along the Melendiz stream with rock-cut churches, about 73 km from the airport; 382 steps lead down into it.
Uçhisar Castle
Climb the rock castle for one of the widest views over the region.
Avanos pottery
Watch potters at the wheel and try it yourself in a workshop.
Where to stay
First visit, with balloons the priority? Stay in Göreme or Uçhisar, closest to the launch sites. Prefer restaurants, wine and a little town life? Ürgüp. Want peace and character? Mustafapaşa or Ortahisar. On a budget or travelling by car? Avanos or Nevşehir city offer good value and are the closest to the airport.
Cave hotels — rooms carved into the rock — are the signature Cappadocia stay. Many are on steep lanes, so give your transfer driver the hotel’s name, not just the village.
A simple three-day plan
Day 1: land at NAV, transfer to your hotel and walk the Rose or Red Valley at sunset. Day 2: sunrise balloon flight, then the Göreme Open-Air Museum and Paşabağ. Day 3: an underground city and the Ihlara Valley, by tour or hire car. Keep a spare morning for the balloon in case the first attempt is cancelled, and check the best time to visit before you book.
