Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Flights
Cappadocia’s hot air balloons take off around sunrise from the valleys around Göreme, on mornings when the flying area is declared safe. Flights are cancelled when conditions are unsuitable, so the single best tip is to book your balloon for your first morning — that leaves the rest of your stay to rebook if needed.

A forecast-based indicator, not a flight decision. Whether balloons fly is decided each morning under the supervision of Turkey’s civil aviation authority (SHGM) using on-site measurements; if flights are cancelled, operators refund or rebook.
How balloon flights are regulated
Ballooning in Cappadocia is supervised by Türkiye’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM). A dedicated Slot Service Centre manages the flying area and allocates take-off slots to the companies. Commercial flights are allowed in a morning period — from 30 minutes before sunrise until 11:00 — and in an afternoon period from 14:00 until sunset, but the classic experience is the sunrise flight.
The number of commercial balloons in the air at the same time is capped: up to 100 in the morning period and up to 50 in the afternoon. The flying area is divided into three weather sectors, and every balloon carries GPS.
The flag system
Every morning, the Slot Service Centre declares a flag for the flying area based on the weather.

| Flag | What it means |
|---|---|
| Green | Conditions are suitable and flights may go ahead — the final decision rests with the pilot and the company. |
| Yellow | Take-off is not approved; commercial flights do not go. |
| Red | Take-off is not approved; commercial flights do not go. |
Today’s flag is shown in the balloon panel on this page and on the Slot Service Centre’s website (shmkapadokya.kapadokya.edu.tr).
When can you fly?
Balloons fly all year round when the weather allows; in 2025 they flew on 223 days. The main season runs from early April to the end of October. Winter flights over snow-covered valleys are unforgettable, but cold fronts and wind mean more cancelled mornings.
There is no single published wind limit: each morning is assessed on forecasts and observations. If your flight is cancelled, reputable operators either move you to another morning or refund you — check their policy before you pay.
Booking tips
- 1
Book the first morning
If the first attempt is cancelled, you still have spare days. Avoid the morning you fly home.
- 2
Expect a very early start
Operators usually collect you from your hotel before dawn; the launch sites around Göreme are a short drive from most hotels.
- 3
Ask the right questions
Basket size, flight duration, the cancellation and refund policy, and what happens on a yellow or red flag day.
- 4
Dress warmly
Mornings are cold even in summer, especially while you wait for the balloon to inflate.
- 5
Or watch from the ground
Viewpoints around Göreme and Uçhisar give spectacular sunrise views of the balloons. Check the weather page the evening before.
Where do the balloons fly?
The busiest launch area is a circle of about 4 km around Göreme, bounded by Çavuşin, the rocks near Paşabağ, Kızılçukur and the Zemi and Bağlıdere valleys. From the basket you look down on fairy chimneys, rock-cut dwellings and the castle of Uçhisar. Stay in Göreme or Uçhisar to be closest to the launch sites.
